| 3 | And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear. | « Saül a battu le poste des Philistins, et même Israël s'est rendu odieux auprès des Philistins. » Et le peuple fut convoqué auprès de Saül, à Galgala. |
| 4 | And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal. | Les Philistins s'assemblèrent pour combattre Israël; ils avaient trente mille chars, six mille cavaliers, et un peuple innombrable comme le sable qui est sur le bord de la mer. Ils montèrent et campèrent à Machmas, à l'orient de Beth-Aven. |
| 5 | And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Bethaven. | Les hommes d'Israël, se voyant dans une grande extrémité, car ils étaient serrés de près, se cachèrent dans les cavernes, dans les broussailles, dans les rochers, dans les trous et dans les citernes. |
| 6 | When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits. | Des Hébreux passèrent aussi le Jourdain, pour aller au pays de Gad et de Galaad. Saül, était encore à Galgala, et tout le peuple derrière lui tremblait. |
| 7 | And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling. | Il attendit sept jours, selon le terme fixé par Samuel. Mais Samuel n'arrivait pas à Galgala, et le peuple se dispersait loin de Saül. |
| 8 | And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him. | Alors Saül dit : « Amenez-moi l'holocauste et les sacrifices pacifiques. » Et il offrit l'holocauste. |
| 9 | And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering. | Comme il achevait d'offrir l'holocauste, voici que Samuel arriva, et Saül sortit au-devant de lui pour le saluer. |
| 10 | And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him. | Samuel lui dit : « Qu'as-tu fait ? » Saül répondit : « Lorsque j'ai vu que le peuple se dispersait loin de moi, que tu n'arrivais pas au terme fixé et que les Philistins étaient assemblés à Machmas, |
| 11 | And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash; | je me suis dit : Maintenant, les Philistins vont descendre contre moi à Galgala, et je n'ai pas imploré Yahweh. Alors, me faisant violence, j'ai offert l'holocauste. » |
| 12 | Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering. | Samuel dit à Saül : « Tu as agi en insensé, tu n'as pas observé le commandement que Yahweh ton Dieu t'avait donné; car Yahweh aurait affermi pour toujours ton règne sur Israël. |
| 13 | And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever. | Mais maintenant, ton règne ne subsistera point. Yahweh s'est cherché un homme selon son coeur et Yahweh l'a destiné à être le chef de son peuple, parce que tu n'as pas observé ce que Yahweh t'avait ordonné. » |
| 14 | But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee. | Et Samuel se leva, et monta de Galgala à Gabaa de Benjamin. Saül passa en revue le peuple qui se trouvait avec lui : il y en avait environ six cents hommes. |
| 15 | And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men. | Saül, Jonathas, son fils, et le peuple qui se trouvait avec eux s'étaient postés à Gabée de Benjamin, et les Philistins campaient à Machmas. |
| 16 | And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash. | L'armée de destruction sortit du camp des Philistins en trois corps : un corps prit le chemin d'Ephra, vers le pays de Sual; |
| 17 | And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual: | un autre corps prit le chemin de Beth-Horon; et le troisième corps, celui de la frontière qui domine la vallée de Seboïm, du côté du désert. |
| 18 | And another company turned the way to Bethhoron: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness. | On ne trouvait point de forgeron dans tout le pays d'Israël; car les Philistins avaient dit : « Que les Hébreux ne puissent plus fabriquer d'épées ou de lances! » |
| 19 | Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears: | Et tout Israël descendait chez les Philistins pour aiguiser chacun son soc, son hoyau, sa hache ou sa charrue, |
| 20 | But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock. | en sorte que le tranchant des socs, des hoyaux, des tridents et des haches était souvent émoussé et les aiguillons non redressés. |
| 21 | Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads. | Il arriva qu'au jour du combat, il ne se trouvait ni lance ni épée dans la main de tout le peuple qui était avec Saül et Jonathas; mais il s'en trouvait auprès de Saül et de Jonathas, son fils. |
| 22 | So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found. | Un poste des Philistins se rendit au passage de Machmas. |
| 23 | And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash. | Un jour, Jonathas, fils de Saül, dit au jeune homme qui portait ses armes : « Viens, et passons jusqu'au poste des Philistins, qui est là, de l'autre côté. » Et il n'en dit rien à son père. |
