| 4 | He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. | Celui qui parle un langage étranger, s'élève lui-même; mais celui qui interprète les Écritures, élève l'Église. |
| 5 | I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. | Je souhaite que vous parliez tous les langages de la terre, mais surtout que vous interprétiez les Écritures; car celui qui interprète, est plus grand que celui qui parle les langages des différents peuples, à moins qu'il ne les traduise, afin que l'Église en reçoive de l'accroissement. |
| 6 | Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? | Maintenant, frères, si je venais parmi vous en parlant des langages inconnues, à quoi vous serais-je utile, si je ne vous adressais des paroles de révélation, ou de science, ou d'interprétation, ou de doctrine? |
| 7 | And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? | De même, si les choses inanimées qui rendent un son, soit une flûte, soit une harpe, ne forment pas des tons distincts, comment connaîtra-t-on ce qui est joué sur la flûte, ou sur la harpe? |
| 8 | For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? | Et si la trompette rend un son confus, qui se préparera au combat? |
| 9 | So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air. | Vous, de même, si vous faites un discours en parlant un langage étranger qui ne puisse être compris, comment saura-t-on ce que vous dites? car vous parlerez en l'air. |
| 10 | There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. | Combien, par exemple, n'y a-t-il pas de sortes de langages dans le monde? Et aucun d'eux ne serait sans signification? |
| 11 | Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me. | Si donc je ne sais ce que ces mots signifient, je serai un barbare pour celui qui parle, et celui qui parle sera un barbare pour moi. |
| 12 | Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church. | Ainsi, puisque vous désirez avec ardeur les dons spirituels, cherchez à en avoir abondamment pour l'accroissement de l'Église. |
| 13 | Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. | C'est pourquoi, que celui qui parle un langage étranger, prie pour qu'il puisse le traduire. |
| 14 | For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. | Car, si je prie dans un langage inconnu, mon esprit prie, mais mon intelligence est sans fruit. |
| 15 | What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. | Qu'y a-t-il donc à faire? Je prierai par l'Esprit, et je prierai aussi par l'intelligence. Je chanterai par l'Esprit, et je chanterai aussi par l'intelligence. |
| 16 | Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? | Autrement, si tu exalte avec l'Esprit, comment celui qui tient la place d'un ignorant répondra-t-il l'Amen à ton action de grâces, puisqu'il ne sait pas ce que tu dis? |
| 17 | For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. | Il est vrai que tes actions de grâces sont excellentes; mais les autres n'en sont pas édifiés. |
| 18 | I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: | Je rends grâces à mon Dieu, de ce que je parle plus de langages que vous tous; |
| 19 | Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue. | Mais j'aime mieux prononcer dans l'Église cinq paroles par mon intelligence, afin d'instruire aussi les autres, que dix mille paroles dans un langage inconnu. |
| 20 | Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men. | Frères, ne soyez pas des enfants sans intelligence; pourquoi seriez-vous des enfants malicieux et des hommes matures quant à la compréhension ? |
| 21 | In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. | Il est écrit dans la loi: Je parlerai à ce peuple par des gens d'une autre langue, et par des lèvres étrangères, et même ainsi ils ne m'écouteront point, dit le Seigneur. |
| 22 | Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. | Ainsi donc les langages étrangers sont un signe provisoire, non pour les croyants, mais pour les juifs incrédules; au lieu que l'interprétation est un signe provisoire, non pour les incrédules, mais pour les croyants. |
| 23 | If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? | Si donc toute l'Église est assemblée en un même lieu, et que tous parlent différents langages, et que des gens du commun peuple, ou des incrédules y entrent, ne diront-ils pas que vous avez perdu le sens? |
| 24 | But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: | Mais si tous interprètent les Écritures, et qu'il entre un incrédule, ou un ignorant, il est convaincu par tous, il est jugé par tous; |
| 25 | And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth. | Et ainsi les secrets de son cœur sont manifestés, et ainsi se prosternant la face contre terre, il adorera Dieu, et publiera que Dieu est véritablement au milieu de vous. |
| 26 | How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying. | Que faut-il donc, frères? Lorsque vous vous assemblez, chacun a-t-il un psaume, ou une doctrine, un langage étranger, une révélation, une interprétation? Que tout se fasse pour l'édification. |
| 27 | If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. | S'il y en a qui parlent le langage d'un peuple étranger, qu'il n'y en ait que deux ou trois, tout au plus, et l'un après l'autre; et qu'il y en ait un qui traduise. |
| 28 | But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. | S'il n'y a point de traducteur, que celui qui parle se taise dans l'Église, et qu'il parle à Dieu en lui-même. |
| 29 | Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. | Qu'il n'y ait aussi que deux ou trois interprètes des Écritures qui parlent, et que les autres jugent. |
| 30 | If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. | Et si un autre qui est présent a une révélation, que le premier se taise. |
| 31 | For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted. | Car vous pouvez tous interpréter les Écritures l'un après l'autre, afin que tous apprennent, et que tous soient exhortés. |
| 32 | And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. | Or, les esprits des interprètes sont soumis aux interprètes; |
| 33 | For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. | Car Dieu n'est point l'auteur de la confusion, mais de la paix. Comme on le voit dans toutes les Églises des saints, |
| 34 | Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. | Que vos femmes gardent le calme dans les Églises, parce qu'il ne leur est pas permis de converser; et qu'elles soient soumises, comme la loi le dit aussi. |
| 35 | And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. | Si elles veulent s'instruire sur quelque chose, qu'elles interrogent leurs maris à la maison; car il n'est pas bienséant aux femmes de discourir dans l'Église. |
| 36 | What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only? | Est-ce de vous que la Parole de Dieu est venue, ou n'est-elle parvenue qu'à vous seuls? |
| 37 | If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. | Si quelqu'un croit être interprète, ou spirituel, qu'il reconnaisse que les choses que je vous écris sont des commandements du Seigneur. |
| 38 | But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant. | Et si quelqu'un est illettré, qu'il soit novice. |
| 39 | Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. | C'est pourquoi, frères, désirez avec ardeur d'interpréter les Écritures, et n'entravez point l’expression des langages étrangers. |
| 40 | Let all things be done decently and in order. | Que toutes choses se fassent avec bienséance et avec ordre. |
